Job Description:
Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Louisiana State University is searching for an Equine Ambulatory Staff Veterinarian. The position has primary responsibility in the Equine Section of the Large Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital and will be expected but not limited to performing general and advanced medical and surgical diagnosis and perform procedures on horses presented for health maintenance and medical diseases. This is a staff veterinarian position with potentially a multi-year appointment in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Job Responsibilities:
75%-Clinical service and instruction. The staff veterinarian will be a member of the equine internal medicine section and be in charge of the equine ambulatory service. The staff veterinarian will provide clinical care in the role of a veterinarian, i.e. examine patients, order tests, make diagnoses, prescribe treatments, and communicate with clients and referring veterinarians, for patients presented to the Equine Ambulatory Service. Equine Ambulatory Service will be supported by students at all times and, whenever necessary, by internists or surgeons from the hospital, particularly to assist with recheck examinations of previously hospitalized patients. Supervision of 4th year veterinary students, house officers and technicians with procedures and treatments, in a primarily field-based setting, with occasional in-house appointments as required.
10%-The Staff Veterinarian will participate in the e-Value assessment system and other duties as assigned related to educating students and house officers on this service.
10%-Participate in emergency clinical services outside of typical working schedule (including nights,
weekends, holidays, and disaster relief) on an as needed basis. House officers provide the majority of out of hours coverage (phone back up for house officers is expected on a rotational basis), with primary emergency out of hours responsibility for staff veterinarian expected to be approximately 5 - 6 weeks per year.
5%-Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
-DVM or equivalent AND two years of experience as an equine clinician.
-Experience in equine medicine and/or surgery.
-Be eligible for Louisiana Faculty veterinary license. Obtain USDA accreditation within 12 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
-DVM or equivalent and three or more years of equine practice, with an ambulatory component.
-Completion of an ABVP or ACVSMR residency.
-1 year of teaching/mentoring/supervising DVM students, house officers or externs, either in the ambulatory setting, or in a classroom role.
-Diplomate status in either ABVP or ACVSMR.
Additional Information:
Able to answer phone calls after hours from house officers for issues regarding department. May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Availability to work 8–10-hour shifts.
This position is subject to oversight and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Requires working with or around areas with hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases.
Physical Requirements - Required to be capable of lifting 50+ pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, crawling, twisting, pushing/pulling, climbing, squatting.
