The Financial Times is seeking a thoughtful and well-sourced reporter to join our team covering the technology industry in China. As the artificial intelligence boom rolls on, technology has become the world’s biggest business, financial and geopolitical story, and we want you to be at the forefront of it.
AI companies in China such as Zhipu, Moonshot and DeepSeek are competing hard with US rivals. Their tactics, and their struggle to gain access to cutting edge Nvidia chips, are one big story. Others include the activities of Chinese hyperscalers such as Alibaba, Huawei and ByteDance, and the broader tech supply chain that produces products such as the iPhone. Then there is the semiconductor industry, which now includes many of the world’s largest companies by market capitalisation, and where China’s attempts to establish itself will be a big business story for the next decade.
We anticipate that the role will be based in Hong Kong, where many Chinese companies maintain their public listing, with the tech hub of Shenzhen in close proximity. However, we are willing to consider other locations, including Taiwan, if the applicant’s nationality allows and their interest leans towards semiconductors.
News is the heart of the job - and we will expect the correspondent to break stories with their reporting and interviews - but we also want and expect them to write across a range of formats, from sharp analysis to magazine features, with an eye for the big picture. You may also be asked to represent the FT at events and in the media.
