The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state’s public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

*This position is Exempt Policymaking and is EXEMPT from certain provisions of the State Human Resources Act (GS 126). This position serves at the pleasure of agency leadership. *
The Regional Improvement Director position leads all district improvement efforts for a designated region, ensuring that these efforts are coordinated, coherent, and responsive to local needs. Through strategic planning, data-driven decision making, change management, and coaching, the Regional Improvement Director ensures districts experience support as one coordinated system rather than as separate or disconnected initiatives while building district capacity and advancing turnaround and continuous improvement efforts.
The Regional Improvement Director exercises substantial independent judgment in defining and adapting regional strategies, prioritizing resources, coordinating cross-functional teams, identifying trends, barriers, and promising practices, and elevating regional needs to agency leadership.
Responsibilities
Job Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary regional lead and primary point of contact for assigned districts and charters, providing a single point of connection between district and charter senior leadership and the agency while fostering collaborative partnerships that strengthen regional improvement efforts.
Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with Regional Education Service Alliance (RESA) Directors to strengthen regional coordination, align supports, and advance shared priorities across districts and charter schools.
Lead regional strategic planning by defining and adapting regional improvement strategies based on data-informed and diagnostic findings, district needs, and data-driven decision making.
Lead the regional core improvement team in the position establishes team priorities and strategies, manages performance and progress, and provides coaching and leadership support to ensure the effective implementation of regional improvement priorities.
Provide coaching, guidance, and leadership support to regional staff to strengthen instructional leadership, curriculum implementation, instructional improvement, and continuous improvement efforts.
Collaborate with Agency Directors, program leads, and cross-functional teams to align resources, reduce duplication of effort, and strengthen the implementation of statewide initiatives.
Develop recommendations that strengthen regional improvement efforts, support turnaround and continuous improvement, and improve the effectiveness of coordinated district support.

Recruitment Range: $81,620.00 - $133,458.00

Primary Purpose of District Improvement and Regional Support:
The District Improvement and Regional Support unit provides statewide leadership to support district improvement through coordinated regional leadership. The unit ensures that regional supports are coordinated, coherent, and responsive to local needs by developing and implementing unified improvement strategies that align instructional leadership, curriculum implementation, leadership development, accountability, and programmatic support. Through strategic planning, data-driven decision making, coaching, and change management, the unit builds the capacity of district and charter leadership teams, advances turnaround and continuous improvement efforts, and strengthens regional systems that improve educator effectiveness and student outcomes. The unit works collaboratively across divisions to ensure districts experience support as one coordinated system rather than as separate or disconnected initiatives.
Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree in education or the special education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution, and six years of experience in public education, including a minimum of three years in an administrative capacity; or Doctoral degree in education or the special education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution, and three years of experience in public education including two years in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
