Role and Responsibilities
The Large-Scale Integrated Photonics (LSIP) Lab at Hewlett Packard Labs has an opening for a qualified Research Scientist to contribute to externally funded research projects in neuromorphic and photonic computing, with a primary focus on HPE Belgium’s EU projects developing optical spiking neural networks for applications such as radar processing, optical communication, high-energy physics and medical imaging.
This role will help develop next-generation photonic and hybrid photonic-electronic computing systems, with particular emphasis on neuromorphic computing, spiking neural networks, and application-driven research. Depending on the candidate’s profile, the work may emphasize photonic hardware, integrated device and system concepts, optical spiking neural networks, or the design and application of neuromorphic and event-driven algorithms and architectures.
The successful candidate will identify and develop promising application areas for spiking and neuromorphic approaches, connect these applications to computational bottlenecks and system requirements, and contribute to proof-of-concept demonstrations, scientific publications, and collaborative project deliverables. The role requires close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team spanning photonics, analog and mixed-signal electronics, machine learning, software, and systems research.
In our team, software for design, experimentation, and data analysis is primarily written in Python, so a strong hands-on background in Python is highly valuable.
