Your Opportunity
In accordance with Letter of Understanding #1 – Success Centre Peer Learning Assistants, under the direct supervision of the Success Centre Coordinator or designated supervisor, provide peer-based academic support by helping students better understand course content, facilitating learning activities, and connecting them with appropriate campus resources to support their academic success. Depending on the assignment, Peer Learning Assistants may:
•
Provide general academic learning support, including collaborative review of course content and/or
•
Provide course-specific supplemental learning assistance for identified courses through study activities and peer-review of course concepts.
Through individual and small-group support, Peer Learning Assistants help their fellow students build confidence and improve academic success.
Functions and Duties
The student will assist the supervisor by performing the following duties:
1.
Offer supplemental learning assistance to students as required by reviewing concepts presented in classes, providing individual help in solving related problems, and providing peer feedback on student work.
2.
Assists students in carrying out learning plans designed by an instructor or faculty member in a program, course, or service area (such as mathematics or English language) and grow related skills.
3.
Where assigned by supervisor, may attend classes, review course materials, and/or provide support related to a specific course, discipline, or program.
4.
Work with the supervisor to create innovative student support activities that lead to improved student outcomes.
5.
Maintain records and follow Success Centre and portfolio procedures.
6.
Track service usage statistics using established Success Centre practices.
7.
Refer students to appropriate college resources and services when additional support is required.
8.
Regularly communicate with the supervisor and other support staff regarding student support activities and initiatives.
9.
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
Education and Experience
•
Enrolled in a post-secondary program at Okanagan College.
•
Prior work, volunteer, tutoring, mentoring, or leadership experience is considered an asset.
Nice to have
•
Previous completion of a relevant course with a final mark of 75% or higher.
•
Proficiency in the content of potentially assigned courses.
•
Preference given to those with experience offering learning assistance.
Skills and Abilities
•
Proficiency in the content of a potentially assigned course
•
Proficiency in the use of a variety of computer software applications
•
Excellent time management skills to coordinate provision of both individual and small group learning assistance.
•
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
•
Developed organizational skills.
•
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, with an aptitude for working in a collegial and collaborative environment.
•
Ability to maintain accurate records and pay attention to detail.
•
Demonstrated commitment to student success and inclusive learning environments.
