The role – what you’ll do:
Barr is seeking an environmental engineer-in-training to join our Calgary office. In this hybrid role, you will support the Assessment and Remediation business unit and undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to the evaluation, management, remediation, and reclamation of mines and other contaminated sites. This person will primarily work with multidisciplinary teams providing field support, engineering analysis, studies, and designs for clients in the mining and oil sands industries, but will also have opportunities with public sector, power, fuels, and manufacturing clients.
Project responsibilities may include coordinating and executing technical programs (monitoring, sampling, reporting) for field programs, conducting site investigations, overseeing on-site and bench-scale testing, evaluating and interpreting laboratory and field data, assisting with environmental design including remediation and water treatment, treatment system monitoring, mine waste management studies, estimating costs, preparing plans, and writing detailed technical reports. Fieldwork opportunities for this position will be year-round and will periodically include out-of-town travel, typically for one to two weeks at a time.
You will also support project delivery by assisting with the preparation of technical work plans, cost estimates, and contractor coordination for site investigations; contributing to technology evaluations, feasibility studies, and the development of remediation, reclamation, or treatment strategies and designs; and preparing technical deliverables such as data summaries, figures, plans, specifications, and draft report sections.

They are adaptable, organized, proactive, eager to learn and comfortable asking thoughtful questions. They bring a high level of attention to detail, take ownership of assigned tasks in dynamic field and office conditions, and are solution oriented. They demonstrate reliability, safety awareness, and a growth mindset as they build their technical skills and professional judgment. Above all, they value teamwork, quality, and integrity in delivering impactful environmental solutions.
