What You’ll Do
Data Center Engineering, Strategic Engineering
•
Provide technical support for strategic electrical engineering efforts
•
Collaborate with data center technical & operations team in setting standards and improving data center efficiency and operations
Data Center Engineering, Design & Retrofit
•
Provide technical design of electrical systems for retrofits
•
Prepare electrical design criteria, conceptual design documents, and specifications for retrofits
•
Prepare technical support for cost analysis and business cases for electrical retrofits & improvements
•
Review electrical system test scripts, procedures, & results and participate in commissioning activities (as required)
•
Travel to data center sites to oversee electrical retrofits & refreshes
Data Center Engineering, Technical Operations
•
Assist in managing relationships with data center service providers, consultants, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers
•
Drive technical operations innovation and efficiency within Uber’s data centers
•
Collaborate with the on-site data center operation teams to improve workflow efficiency for data hall electrical systems
•
Collaborate with internal teams to develop technical operations standards for electrical systems
•
Review with partner teams to ensure continued service delivery during electrical data hall retrofits and preventive maintenances
•
Review electrical operation configurations for compliance with SLAs
•
Development and execution of electrical preventive maintenances
•
Provide communication to internal and external teams about electrical system operation and limitations, as well as scheduled activities and maintenances
•
Development and continuous improvement of MOPs, SOPs, Change Management requests, etc. for Uber procedures to external companies
•
Participation with internal and external teams of potential data center electrical service impacts and high risk activity
•
Respond as-needed during data center outages and incidents
•
Collaborate and support partner teams to assist with power, cooling and network connectivity outages
•
Participate in incident review meetings, root cause analysis investigations and discussions
•
Travel to data center sites for system audits, engineering studies, and as-built updates
Basic Qualifications
General
•
B.S. in electrical or architectural engineering degree
•
Minimum 8 years of professional experience in data center design, construction and operations (PE is preferred)
•
Travel to data center sites (25% to 50%)
Technical
•
Deep Domain Experience
•
Power Distribution: Three-phase, conditioning, and distribution from utility to chip
•
Understanding of mission critical power distribution, UPS, PDU and various data center electrical topologies
•
Medium and low voltage design and distribution
•
Understanding of electrical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
•
Knowledge of industry standards, NEC, building codes, energy codes, and life safety fire alarm standards (e.g. NFPA)
•
Fire protection (e.g. fire alarm) conceptual design, layout and distribution
•
Entry Level Domain Experience
•
Cooling: Theory, methods and efficiency (PUE)
•
Understanding and working knowledge of mechanical air-side and water-side systems for mission critical environments and various data center HVAC topologies
•
Air-side design and distribution
•
Wet-side design and distribution (chilled and condenser water systems)
•
CRAC and CRAH design and distribution
•
Understanding of mechanical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
•
Knowledge of industry standards, ASHRAE, mechanical / building codes, energy codes, and life safety standards (e.g. NFPA)
•
Networking & Structured Cabling Distribution: Basics of all layers plus cabling, optics and supporting infrastructure
•
Understanding of mission critical structured cabling distribution to coincide with networking topology
•
Understanding of various components within structured cabling designs
•
Knowledge of industry standards, BICSI and RCDD standards
•
DCIM: Monitoring protocols, data analysis and reporting
•
Cross functional knowledge of mission critical systems, strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
•
Exposure to load management within mission critical facilities
•
Improve efficiency of data center technical systems (power, cooling, & structured cabling)

Non-Technical
•
Collaborate and work with internal teams, Data Center Engineering & Operations staff, and carry out responsibilities with guidance from Senior Staff

Pay Transparency
For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $180,000 per year - USD $200,000 per year.
For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $180,000 per year - USD $200,000 per year.
For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
