Role 1 – Analytical Chemistry – Stevenage
Required degree – BSc in Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry or similar
Overview of the Department
This industrial placement provides hands-on experience in analytical science, supporting the development and testing of medicines. Students will gain exposure to a range of analytical techniques, generate data that informs key project decisions, and contribute to activities such as method development, laboratory documentation, and technical reporting, with support from an experienced GSK analyst.
Working alongside scientists from different disciplines, students will contribute to real research and development projects while building their technical, problem-solving, and project management skills. There will also be opportunities to take ownership of individual work packages or projects and, in some roles, support the testing of materials and products for clinical studies.

Analytical Techniques: Gain experience using analytical techniques including HPLC, GC, dissolution, MS, NMR, vibrational spectroscopy, Karl Fischer and IC-MS within a GMP environment.

Method Development: Support the development, validation and continuous improvement of analytical methods, documentation and technical reports.

Quality & Compliance: Learn GMP, SOPs, stability testing, batch analysis, material release activities and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).

Collaboration: Work under the guidance of experienced GSK scientists and alongside cross-functional technical experts.
•
Project Ownership: Take ownership of a personal project and/or work packages, contributing to the development of new medicines.
Role 2 – Synthetic Chemistry – Stevenage
Required degree – MChem, MSci in Chemistry
Overview of the Department
This industrial placement offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in Synthetic Chemistry within GSK’s state-of-the-art laboratories in Stevenage. Students will design and carry out experiments to synthesise molecules of interest, applying advanced techniques to isolate and characterise compounds and generate data that supports project decision-making. Working under the guidance of an experienced GSK chemist, the successful candidate will develop practical laboratory skills, contribute to drug discovery research, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientific experts.
Synthetic Chemistry is fundamental to the discovery and development of new medicines and plays a key role in chemical biology and medicinal chemistry. These highly practical placements are ideal for motivated students with a strong interest in synthetic organic chemistry who enjoy working in a laboratory environment and want to gain valuable industry experience in a world-leading research organisation.
