The Assistant Director: Fitness Programs is responsible for the daily operations and staff supervision of a comprehensive Tempe Fitness Program which includes Group Fitness, Personal Training, Small Group Training, and supervision of three (3) Weight Rooms. This position is responsible for creating welcoming programmable spaces and meaningful opportunities that support both student success and community well-being. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Program Operations (45%)
•
Oversee the day-to-day operations of fitness programs, including group fitness, personal training, small group training, and weight room spaces.
•
Coordinate program offerings such as cycle, Pilates, reformer Pilates, yoga, strength training, small group training, and other fitness-based programs.
•
Manage scheduling, client intake processes, trainer assignments, equipment needs, and program logistics.
•
Ensure fitness programs and spaces are safe, welcoming, and aligned with ASU policies, industry standards, and risk management guidelines.
•
Monitor program participation, revenue, trends, and participant feedback to support program growth and improvement.
•
Assist with marketing, promotion, and communication efforts for fitness programs and services.
•
Collaborate with university departments, student organizations, and campus partners to support special events, programs and/or wellness initiatives.
Staff Management (45%)
•
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate a management intern, fitness instructors, personal trainers, small group training staff, and weight room supervisors.
•
Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and professional development to support staff success, safe program delivery and service quality.
•
Lead instructor training courses, NASM preparation, and other development opportunities for students interested in fitness staff positions.
•
Maintain staff expectations, training materials, procedures, certifications, and compliance requirements.
•
Manage student employee payroll and support budget oversight for assigned program areas.
General Duties/Expectations (10%)
•
Support department, campus, and university-wide initiatives as assigned by leadership staff.
•
Demonstrate flexibility, critical thinking, and independent problem-solving in a dynamic setting.
•
Provide exceptional customer service and thoughtful solutions that foster a welcoming and supportive environment for all participants.
•
Perform other duties as assigned.
•
Availability for occasional evenings and weekends is required.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•
Master’s degree in Higher Education, Recreation, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health, Sports Management, or a related field and at least one (1) year of professional experience.
•
Experience in leading fitness classes and/or executing a personal training program.
•
Experience supervising, training, and mentoring staff.
•
Proven ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple projects effectively.
•
Valid Personal Training certification and/or Group Fitness Instructor certification through AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NSCA, or NASM, or a nationally accredited organization or obtain within first 90 days of employment.
WORK ENVIROMENT
•
Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
•
Use computer effectively - including inputting, reviewing and retrieving information, extended periods of viewing screens and using mouse and keybord
•
Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.

Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS) is committed to enrolling all qualified students at Arizona State University and assisting them in their academic success. EOSS provides a broad range of services and support to students and prospective students ranging from outreach efforts with K-12 schools, orientation programs for new freshman, bridge programs to assist the transition to a university environment, and a wide variety of services, programs and activities for enrolled students. EOSS has direct responsibility for multiple departments across four campuses, some of which include the Dean of Students, University Housing, Health Services, Counselling Services, Disability Resources, the Memorial Union, TRIO programs, Sun Devil Fitness, Student Government, Student Media, Career Services, Access ASU and others.
