Job Description:
The New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at ASU is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our undergraduate student services team at the West Valley Campus. Utilizing holistic academic advising, retention and support strategies, this position will provide a hybrid of advising and retention/persistence support to First-Year undergraduate campus students. They will work as a part of both the retention and advising teams to increase persistence, retention and graduation rates. This position is located at ASU’s West Valley campus with the opportunity for hybrid work as the business need allows.
Essential Duties:
•
Provides individual and group FYS academic advising and/or interacts with students in support of academic success
•
Executes strategic campaigns, events, outreach, advising, and engagement efforts to increase retention and persistence among the First-Year campus cohort for the New College
•
Leads and executes New Student Orientation and any events or efforts associated with onboarding (including ASU Welcome, College Assembly, Move-in and other college-specific events as assigned)
•
Facilitates multiple sections of NEW 101 as assigned
•
Supervises assigned Peer Academic Leader (PAL) in the residence hall and supports/mentors programming efforts as assigned
•
Monitors FYS student academic progress and program effectiveness using a variety of technology-based tools (such as DARS, Salesforce, and analytics software/tools), and the application of retention-focused strategies, and relevant advising/student development/engagement theories
•
Maintains an openness to new and developing tools utilized across the university to aid in student success and excellent service
•
Able to learn and use multiple systems at the same time (such as student record databases, customer relationship management systems, degree progress tools, appointment systems, analytics software/tools)
•
Utilizes collegial, interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in person, via email and by phone; establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships.·
•
Proactively monitors FYS student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues accurately and with empathy·
•
Collaborates closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to the student’s goals, interests, and skills
•
Acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective First-Year students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to First-Year academic success
•
Possesses a clear understanding of the larger picture of the college and/or departmental processes and expectations around the utilization of various tools and how they impact the student experience
•
Recognizes and resolves complex issues and/or escalates to leadership with potential solutions and appropriate judgment
•
Demonstrates an ability to think critically and use sound judgment to remove barriers to enrollment and overcome objections to encourage resilience in the First-Year persistence journey
•
Analyzes financial and academic challenges proactively to ensure timely progress to enrollment and course completion
•
Carefully encourages career path and major changes as appropriate in the first year.·
•
Advise students on university policies, procedures, and academic expectations, offering strategic problem-solving support for academic and personal challenges
•
Maintain accurate student records, generate reports, and provide data-driven insights to support student engagement and retention efforts
•
Establish and maintain strong relationships with students, offering holistic support as they transition to and navigate university life
•
Serve as a liaison between students, faculty, financial aid, and campus support services to help resolve issues and eliminate barriers to student success as directed.·
•
Demonstrate appropriate emotional intelligence, critical thinking, discretion, and sound judgment in all student interactions and program initiatives
•
Review, respond and resolve all student of concern (SOC) requests for First-Year undergraduate cohorts as assigned
•
Identify key student populations for targeted outreach and specialized support initiatives
•
Organize and facilitate group workshops, and student support programming to prepare students for academic and career opportunities post-graduation as directed
•
Guide students in selecting academic and extracurricular options that align with their goals, interests, and skills while ensuring they are aware of available support services
•
Participate in staff meetings, professional development workshops, and university-wide student support initiatives as directed
•
Assist in implementing, evaluating, and refining student retention programs to improve effectiveness as directed
•
Provide training and mentorship as directed to staff and peer mentors, collaborating on interventions for at-risk students
•
Establish a visible and consistent presence on campus, attending campus and college events including nights and weekends as assigned
•
Deliver engaging presentations to incoming and current students, utilizing multiple platforms for effective communication in both in-person and virtual settings
•
Perform other duties as assigned to support student success and university initiatives
Desired Qualifications:
•
Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or closely related field
•
Direct academic advising and retention/engagement experience with First-Year undergraduate student populations. Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and methods of evidence- based, academic advising and retention strategies
•
Demonstrated knowledge of ASU’s academic structure, programs, colleges, departments, and organizations
•
Experience in interpreting student needs and determining when to liaise with other university resources
•
Experience in designing presentation materials and evidence of effective oral presentations in group settings
•
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and use emotional intelligence
•
Evidence of professional maturity, discretion, and judgment
•
Experience in applying the principles, techniques, and methods of teamwork, compromise, and collaboration to produce desired outcomes
•
Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers, faculty, students, administration, and other interested parties
•
Experience in rapidly adapting and effectively utilizing new technology, practices, policies, and methods
•
Demonstrated ability to think critically and independently, while operating effectively in an organizational hierarchy
•
Experience with use of internet-based research tools and Microsoft Office computer applications
•
Experience with Salesforce, Peoplesoft, and other student tracking tools preferred
Working Environment:
•
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and to walk moderate distances to perform work
•
Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds
