During the playing and practice season (generally 18 - 30 weeks in a 52 week period), when this individual’s primary responsibility is coaching a sport, the coach will stand/walk/sit for 3-6 hours per day at practice, perform office tasks (meet with student-athletes and colleagues and respond to correspondence), and on the phone and computer (primarily recruiting).
Outside of the playing and practice season or on days in which there is not scheduled practice or competition, the coach will sit /walk/stand during the day, and conduct business both in-person and on the phone.
They must be able to enact the emergency action plan at practice and competition, supervise students on day and overnight travel, and organize/manage travel plans for themself and the team.
A coach is required to create and respond to correspondence (email and Microsoft office/Google docs) and maintain electronic recruiting records.
They must be able to provide basic demonstrations of skills and tactics, describe any modifications they are unable to demonstrate, apply appropriate game rules to the teaching and practicing and monitor for safety while coaching.
They must be able to recruit student-athletes, which requires phone calls and traveling off-campus, and evaluating written, oral and digital information from prospective student-athletes, and interact with outside interests in the form of DePauw alumni, high school coaches, club team coaches, and parents during the recruitment of student athletes. The coach must interact with colleagues from Admissions to ensure effective visits by prospective student athletes, which includes scheduling their student athletes for host training, securing hosts, and coordinating communication between themselves, the admissions office and the prospective student athlete.
Coaching work is conducted in a traditional office environment as well as inside and outside in athletics and recreational facilities. Ambient temperature, humidity and extreme heat or cold may be present.
