Senior Mechanical Project Engineer
Giga Energy | Engineering > System and Design Engineering > Mechanical Engineering
About the role
Full-time | On-site
About Giga
Giga Energy develops and builds AI data centers, bringing equipment manufacturing, engineering, construction, and real estate development together. Our integrated approach connects financing with the equipment, power, and construction that bring each project into operation.
The role
We’re hiring a Senior Mechanical Project Engineer to serve as the Design Engineering team’s full-time technical representative at active construction sites. Mechanical systems need to be installed to the design intent, and field issues need to be found and resolved quickly. This role keeps the engineering team closely connected to construction so that site conditions reach the people making design decisions.
Day to day, you’ll be the primary on-site representative for Design Engineering through construction, startup, and commissioning. You’ll review field installations, submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs, walk the site with contractors and trades, and work with construction managers, vendors, commissioning teams, and site personnel. You’ll also act as the liaison between site teams and off-site design engineers.
Your scope spans hydronic and data center cooling systems, including direct-to-chip liquid cooling, and conventional HVAC for office, administrative, and support spaces.
What you’ll own
•
Field conformance. You review installations against drawings, specifications, codes, vendor requirements, and engineering intent, and document where they differ.
•
Field changes. You evaluate proposed field changes and give the design team technically sound recommendations.
•
Hydronic and cooling systems. You oversee pumps, heat exchangers, piping, valves, water treatment, flushing, and cleanliness, including CDUs and secondary cooling loops.
•
Office and support HVAC. You oversee air-handling units, VAV systems, ductwork, outside air, exhaust, heating, terminal equipment, and controls, and resolve clashes involving ductwork, piping, access, and clearances.
•
RFIs and submittals. You support resolution of RFIs, field questions, design clarifications, and non-conformance items, and review submittals and shop drawings.
•
Startup and commissioning. You verify that installed systems operate according to approved sequences of operation, and support testing, balancing, and functional performance testing with commissioning agents and controls contractors.
•
Turnover. You make sure open engineering and mechanical issues are documented and closed before project turnover.
•
Lessons learned. You turn construction and commissioning findings into practical feedback for future designs, specifications, and installation practices.
Requirements
•
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
•
7+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience, including significant work on the design, construction, or commissioning of hydronic and HVAC systems.
•
Working knowledge of hydronic system design, including pipe sizing and hydraulic calculations, pump selection and system curves, heat exchangers, and control valves and balancing.
•
Working knowledge of HVAC load calculations, equipment selection and sizing, duct sizing and air distribution, ventilation and outside-air requirements, piping materials and installation practices, and mechanical controls and sequences of operation.
•
Experience reviewing mechanical construction drawings, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs.
•
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and HVAC systems in the field, and to make sound engineering judgments when field conditions differ from the original design.
•
Strong communication skills, with experience working effectively with engineers, contractors, trades, vendors, commissioning teams, and project leadership.
•
Willing and able to maintain a full-time presence at active construction sites, comfortable serving as the senior engineering representative there, and willing to travel temporarily to support multiple project sites as required.
Useful additional experience
•
Designing or delivering mechanical systems for data centers, mission-critical facilities, industrial facilities, or other high-availability environments.
•
Direct-to-chip liquid cooling, coolant distribution units, secondary cooling loops, and redundant or concurrently maintainable cooling architectures.
•
Mechanical system commissioning, testing and balancing (TAB), and functional performance testing.
•
Building automation systems and BIM or model coordination tools such as Revit or Navisworks.
•
Professional Engineer (PE) license, or progress toward licensure.
